For years, Instagram lived in its own little world, miles away from SEO reporting. You could track likes, shares and reach all day long, but working out how your social content actually showed up in Google Search? Near enough impossible.
That just changed.
Google has rolled out Platform Properties in Search Console, letting creators and businesses track how their content on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X appears in Google Search.
Another sign that social content isn't just part of the search ecosystem.
It's becoming a huge one.
What’s changed?
Until now, Search Console was for verifying websites. Now you can add supported social profiles and get your hands on the SEO metrics you already know:
- Impressions
- Clicks
- Clickthrough rate (CTR)
- Average position
- Top performing posts
- Search queries driving visibility
So for the first time, businesses can actually see which Google searches are surfacing their Instagram content, instead of leaning on Instagram Insights alone.
Why it matters
Google's been heading this way for a while.
Search results now serve up Instagram posts, Reels, TikToks, YouTube Shorts and creator content right alongside traditional websites. And Instagram has quietly become a search engine of its own, with people searching for brands, products, tutorials, travel inspo and restaurants without ever leaving the app.
The line between search and social? Gone.
This update makes it official: Google now treats social profiles as searchable assets, not just marketing channels.
How to actually use the Search Console update
Once your social accounts are connected to Search Console, here's how to get the most out of the data:
- Understand your audience. Use the Insights report to spot the top performing, trending and declining search queries pulling traffic to your social content. Those themes are your next Reel, caption or content series, built around what people are genuinely searching for.
- Spot trending content. Use the 24 hour filter to catch sudden spikes in search traffic to new posts. If something starts building momentum, push it across your other channels while it's hot.
- Compare platforms. Export data from multiple Platform Properties to see how your content stacks up across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X. Makes it far easier to work out which platforms and formats are driving the most search visibility.
- Refresh existing content. Keep an eye out for older posts or videos creeping back up Google Search. Pin them, spin them into a follow up, or update captions and titles to squeeze out more visibility. You can also use Search Console annotations to track whether your edits actually move the needle over time.
- Test different formats. Compare short form versus long form videos, playlists versus individual videos, or different content themes to see what consistently pulls search traffic, then build your strategy around it.
Social SEO: what brands should do next
Here's how to optimise your social content for search:
- Optimise profiles with clear descriptions and relevant keywords
- Write captions that mirror how customers actually search
- Make helpful, informative video content with subtitles and on screen text
- Keep investing in quality website content alongside social
- Connect your social accounts to Google Search Console to monitor search performance
- Review which topics and formats are pulling the most visibility
The businesses that win in search will think beyond single channels. They'll build a strong, connected digital presence with brand mentions everywhere their audience looks.
The Bottom Line
'Social SEO' isn't a new phrase. But Google's latest update gives it a lot more weight.
The businesses that come out on top will be the ones creating content that's discoverable wherever their audience is searching.
